Five Interesting Facts of the Korean Language
Hangul’s Scientific Design: Korean is written in Hangul, an alphabet noted for its scientific design. Created in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great and his scholars, Hangul consists of 14 consonants and 10 vowels. Its design corresponds to the shapes the mouth made when the sounds are pronounced. This unique feature allows for a relatively straightforward and systematic approach to learning and translating Korean compared to languages with more complex scripts.
Levels of Formality: Similar to Japanese, Korean language uses several levels of speech formality based on the social hierarchy and the relationship between the speakers. These levels affect verb endings and other parts of speech. Translators must accurately interpret the appropriate level of formality, particularly in business and interpersonal communication, to maintain the intended respect and politeness.
Absence of Gendered Pronouns: Korean does not traditionally use gender-specific pronouns. While modern language has adapted somewhat under the influence of Western cultures, the use of gender-neutral terms is still prevalent. This can lead to challenges in translation, especially into languages with gender-specific pronouns, and requires careful contextual understanding.
Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) Order: Korean grammar follows a Subject-Object-Verb order, which is different from the Subject-Verb-Object structure common in English. This fundamental difference in sentence structure can pose challenges in maintaining the natural flow of sentences when translating into or from Korean, necessitating skillful rearrangement without losing the original meaning.
Konglish and Loanwords: Korean uses many English loanwords, known as “Konglish.” These terms are adapted to fit Korean phonetics and sometimes take on slightly altered meanings. Translators need to be cautious with these to avoid confusion or inaccuracies, especially when translating technical or popular culture-related content.
